We understand that a visit to the dentist may be a nerve-wracking experience for some due to many different reasons – at our clinic we like to get to know you as a person to try and help you overcome any fears or anxieties you may have. We also offer oral and intravenous conscious sedation for those who wish to have a little extra help. A number of our dentists and nursing staff have undergone extensive post-graduate training and have qualifications in dental conscious sedation.

A sedative drug is prescribed to the patient to take the night before their appointment and for the morning a couple of hours before they arrive at the clinic. This will help to relax the patient and calm any nerves that they may be feeling about their treatment.

Intravenous sedation is a technique used in dentistry to help nervous or anxious patients to relax for dental procedures. It involves giving the patient a small injection in the arm or hand using a sedative drug. The sedative drug induces a relaxed state of mind and most patients will not remember treatment some degree. Patients may feel as though they have been sleeping for the duration of the sedation appointment but in fact they are conscious with verbal contact maintained throughout the treatment. Once the treatment has been carried out the patient will remain at the practice for a short period of time for recovery, before being discharged into the care of their escort.

The dentist will discuss with you the procedure and answer any questions you may have at an assessment visit when a detailed medical history will also be taken. A consent form will be signed at this visit by you stating that you understand the procedure involved and that you have read the instruction sheet.

A responsible adult escort must accompany you to your appointment and escort you home after treatment under the conscious sedation. Arrangements must be made to sure that you are supervised for the rest of the day. It is essential that the escort gives attention to you and therefore should not be responsible for children, elderly and/or dependant relatives.

On the day of treatment please make sure you are accompanied by an adult (somebody over 18 years of age), who can drive you home.

Make sure you have a light meal about 1-2 hours before attending your appointment.

Take your medication as per normal routine – informing the dentist of this at the assessment appointment and when you arrive for your sedation appointment.

Wear loose comfortable clothing – nothing too tight and no high heels!
